Doggy Manners - AKC Canine Good Citizen

cgc logoThis course is a great course for those people that want to teach their dog how to be a well-behaved family member.  It is important that you, as a pet owner, are able to take your dog to the veterinarian or groomer and know that he/she can be handled without difficulty.  That you can take your dog for a walk through the neighborhood without having to struggle with pulling.  In this course, your dog can learn where his/her own special 'spot' is to lie down in during meals or family time.

For this class it is important that your dog be able to socialize appropriately with other dogs and people.  If you have a dog that is reactive (that is a dog that will lung or be aggressive towards other dogs and/or people)we encourage you to contact a trainer that specializes in helping reactive dogs to work through that issue before attempting this class.

This class covers the skills required to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen test.

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting politely for petting
  • accepting grooming
  • walking on a loose lead
  • walking through a crowd
  • sit and down on command
  • staying in place
  • come when called
  • reaction to distractions
  • supervised separation

CGC1You will get help and information on the subject of helping your dog learn how to learn.  We use positive reinforcement when training and do not ever advocate hurting your dog.  Yes, there are times when a dog needs correction.  Corrections need to be appropriate and are NOT punishment.  You will receive instruction on what is appropriate correction for your dog.  Not all dogs are the same therefore, appropriate correction for one dog may not be appropriate for the other dog.

At the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to take the AKC Canine Good Citizenship test at no cost.  This is a great way to proof your newly found skills. Learn about the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program here.

Did you know that your dog does not have to have 'papers' to register your dog with the AKC?  If you have a mixed-breed dog you can opt to get an AKC Canine Partners #.  If you have a purebred dog with no papers you can opt for the AKC Purebred Alternative Listing Program.  The benefits of doing so include the ability to compete in AKC performance events such as Obedience, Rally and Agility.  These sports are a LOT of fun for both you and your dog and we encourage everyone to get involved.
